A good ol' obsessively researched whaling webcomic, complete with tie-in historical essays

I own one of Jane Mai's diary comics about working for PEOW and she's really good at these loose sketchy comics with great comic timing. Recently she released a new website and it's really fun to explore!

A comic about trans teen nerds who commit murders and the insufferable true crime people who follow their story. These stories are machines that turn cringe into insight. Max Graves makes you feel compassion for characters you can't stand.

These are two panel diary comics. I think this does interesting things with comic timing, though when I asked them about it on IG they said it's just easier to draw. They also make good infinity train fanart.

Wow, those comix really do have too many words in them. And the colors really are clashing! But it's a magic realist otherworld dripping in weird wordplay and overly specific prog rock merch, and that's very nice to me. Even if I have less of a wall-of-text tolerance than I did in high school (I was a homestuck; I lack discretion) this comic is a devastatingly earnest snapshot of the authors neuroses and hyperfixations. When I read Subnormality I feel like Winston Rowntree's brain is connected directly to mine, and that's what art is all about. Plus there's cute girls in it.

I've decided to use this space (thanks cassowary!) to bookmark my favorite webcomics, I think. Unwinders Tall Comics is so good, man. If you want something more current than this archive.org link, the creator Eli Parker is on twitter at UnwinderH which I check every day at work because he is a very funny man. The tall comics jokes are really off the wall, zany yet quiet, with extremely bananas character design. The line art and color are almost poetic - it's done in shaky, wavery pencils, which almost reminds me of Roz Chast if only because I'm a huge Roz Chast guy. The text bubbles are totally jarring and out of place. This makes the art seem worse than it is, which makes me feel special for thinking it's good. When Scott McCloud was all excited about the infinite canvas of webcomics, the tallness of tall comics was what he was talking about.
